Blog Battrang 360* - During the period from the 14th to 19th centuries, the commercial relations between Vietnam and other countries in the world were promoted. Ceramic products became a favorite export in many Southeast and Eastern Asian countries, creating preconditions for Vietnamese ceramic production to reach its peak. In this period, the ceramic making was vigorously developed with many specialized production centers such as Bat Trang (Hanoi ), Nam Sach (Hai Duong), Tho Ha (Bac Giang), Phu Lang (Bac Ninh), etc.
The Bat Trang ceramics were mainly produced to meet the domestic demands and for export, especially religious articles (lamp-stands and incense urns). Many products preserved in the National Museum of Vietnamese History are carved with the maker’s name, production place and date.
Bat Trang is famous for its blue and white, brown-patterned, polychrome and cracked-glazed ceramics.

Among polychrome ceramic products, worshipping articles account for the largest percentage, including different kinds of incense urns, candlesticks, miniature dragon palanquins, pairs of big vases, big sole vases that are decorated with unglazed applique patterns of flowers and birds. Household utensils such as liquor jars, lime-pots, tobacco pipe-bowls are also very popular.

The National Museum of Vietnamese History is now exhibiting a collection of different kinds of lamp-stands, incense urns with three layers of lotus petals, incense urns with legs or supports, lotus-shaped incense urns with lotus petal shaped support. Besides, dragon-shaped candlesticks, votive platforms, pots decorated with four precious flowers, statues of Vajradhara, Meitraya and unicorns are also characteristic products of the Bat Trang school of cracked glazed ceramics.
